Neutral body positioning is a comfortable posture that allows your joints to align naturally. Sitting in a neutral position reduces stress on your muscles, tendons, and bones, and lowers your risk of developing a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) caused by frequent computer use, awkward postures, repetitive motion, and forceful exertion.
POOR POSTURE HURTS!
Did you know that sitting for extended periods of time is linked with health problems, including obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol levels?
COULD YOU HAVE POSTURE PROBLEMS?
Ask yourself these questions and find out:
- How does my body feel at the end of the day compared to the beginning of the day?
- How often do I feel pain, tightness, or limited range of motion?
- How much time do I spend sitting down each day?
- How often do I stretch or take breaks periodically to avoid fatigue?
- How often do I prepare myself for my workday and activities of daily living?
WHAT DOES LOWER BODY NEUTRAL POSTURE LOOK LIKE?
• The spine is supported at 5-10 degrees off the vertical position.
• The lumbar and hip are at a 100-110 degree angle.
• The knees are level with the hips or the hips are slightly higher.
• The feet are supported on the floor or footrest.
MOVE THROUGHOUT THE DAY
- Perform calf raises while you brush your teeth.
- Park farther from the entrance of the building.
- Add a 15 minute walk to your lunch menu.
- Hold walking meetings instead of sitting in a conference room.
- Talk while standing.
- Take the stairs.
- Get up often and stretch your lower back, hips, quads, hamstrings, and calves.
- Turn TV time into a workout.
